Who We Are
Our Story
The BET Foundation, established by the Korir-Tanui family, based in South Australia, has been committed since 2015 to ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and supporting families of children with disabilities in Africa.
The fight against FGM is deeply personal for the BET Foundation. Our CEO, Emily Korir, was the first in her family to escape FGM, while her own mother endured the painful and harmful practice. This personal connection drives the passion and urgency behind our mission. FGM is a global crisis, with over 200 million women and girls worldwide affected, according to the World Health Organization. In Australia, it is estimated that around 53,000 girls and women, born overseas, may have undergone FGM/C. This statistic further motivates us to create change, both in Africa and Australia.
